The Astell&Kern AK100 was more than just a new product; it was a strategic milestone designed to redefine the landscape of portable high-fidelity audio. As the inaugural device for iRiver’s premium sound solution brand, the project carried the weight of establishing a visual trajectory for the entire brand’s future. The brief called for a design that exuded "premium" through every touchpoint—demanding rigorous CMF (Color, Material, Finish) research and a distinctive "character" that could serve as a lasting brand identity.
Building on the minimalist and refined DNA of the iRiver brand, the design process focused intensely on the harmony of proportions and the precise placement of functional elements. While the initial client request suggested a dial UI on the front face, a more evocative and differentiated solution was proposed: a side-mounted dial inspired by the crown of a classic timepiece. This bold architectural choice not only provided a superior tactile experience but also became the iconic signature of the brand, integrated into all subsequent models as a core identity trait.
The AK100 achieves a sophisticated, "well-crafted" aesthetic through a deliberate contrast of materials. Its solid, brushed-metal body in deep black is paired with a sleek tempered glass back, conveying a sense of refined durability. The protruding side dial, meticulously machined to catch the light, serves as a striking focal point. This combination of an intuitive 4-way interface, a 2.4-inch touchscreen, and analog-inspired controls ensures that the pursuit of Mastering Quality Sound (MQS) is as effortless as it is beautiful. The result is a digital device with a soul—an analog ambiance for the modern professional.
The Astell & Kern ‘AK100’ is the solution to the poor quality of musical sound for the sake of portability, and a way to ultimately bring back the original sound quality of the music, MQS, back to music artists, recording engineers and professionals.
