In the printer business, ink represents a critical pillar of both revenue and user experience. The market, however, is saturated with non-genuine continuous ink supply systems, creating an ongoing challenge for HP. Consumers are drawn to these alternatives not only because of their lower cost, but also because of the inconvenience of frequent cartridge replacement. With limited viable substitutes, many users ultimately turn away from genuine ink despite understanding the trade-offs. In response to this reality, HP made the strategic decision to develop a continuous ink supply system that uses genuine HP ink. As a pilot project, the system was designed as an accessory that could be seamlessly expanded and connected to the existing Everett printer model. Rather than approaching it as a standalone product, the design intentionally inherits and aligns with Everett’s established design language, ensuring visual continuity and brand coherence. At the same time, the project placed strong emphasis on usability. Particular attention was given to intuitive window opening mechanisms and a clear, effortless ink replacement process, reducing friction in everyday interaction. The result is a solution that balances business strategy, brand integrity, and user-centered design—transforming a long-standing pain point into a more refined and trustworthy experience.
