The HP Officejet Mobile Printer was born from a fundamental need: enabling professionals to maintain a seamless office setup while on the move. I initially proposed the strategic concept under the title "Vision for Mobile Printing," and its strong reception from senior management led to my appointment as the lead designer for the development phase.
The primary challenge of this project lay in a complex constraint: we needed to implement a fresh, premium design language while maximizing the reuse of components from a pre-existing development track. This required a delicate balancing act between innovation and engineering efficiency. Through close collaboration with the engineering team, we introduced an external snap-fit layering structure. This solution allowed us to achieve the desired new aesthetic without increasing the overall footprint of the device.
Every surface, part break, and functional detail was meticulously refined to ensure the design felt cohesive rather than forced. My focus remained on balancing a robust feel with an elegant, professional look—ensuring that the scrupulous care given to CMF at key touchpoints was preserved from the initial concept through to final mass production. The result is a simplified, intuitive tool that provides a frictionless experience for business professionals who value both reliability and sophisticated design.
